January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month—a time to move beyond awareness and focus on what truly prevents exploitation. At WorldWE, prevention means investing in survivor leadership and advancing policies grounded in lived experience.
Survivor leadership is one of our most effective prevention tools. Through our STAND Fellowship Program, survivors are shaping policy, leading advocacy, and driving solutions that work because they are informed by real expertise.
Prevention also requires strong, survivor-centered laws. This month, the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act was finally signed into law, marking the first national legislation to provide trafficking survivors who were criminalized for their exploitation a federal pathway to relief.
I am grateful to our coalition partners who share this commitment to survivor-centered prevention. Together, we are building lasting change—this month and beyond.

WorldWE continues to advance survivor-centered advocacy at every level. Last week, Policy and Programs Associate Bella Peracchi joined partners in Maine for a special screening of The Right Track documentary in Portland and panel conversation about the Survivor Model, hosted by The Jensen Project. WorldWE also partnered with advocates in Connecticut at the Fairfield County Anti-Trafficking Coalition Symposium, where Policy Director Rebecca Zipkin spoke on law enforcement response and policy related to commercial sexual exploitation, and Policy & Education Manager Dahlia Locke addressed the links between pornography and trafficking.

Deadline Extended: DOJ Compensation Process for Victims Trafficked Through Backpage.com
------------------------------------------------------------
In December 2024, the Department of Justice forfeited over $200 million in assets traceable to Backpage’s profits. These funds are now available to compensate victims for eligible losses. Victims whose sex trafficking was facilitated through advertisements posted on Backpage.com between Jan. 1, 2004, and April 6, 2018, and who incurred financial losses related to their trafficking may be eligible for remission.
