Compassion - the forgotten escalation
In June 2018, a passenger named Lynette Scribner was waiting at Logan International Airport when she noticed something she couldn’t stop watching.
A woman was signing into a man’s hand.
Not the kind of sign language most people imagine—gestures shaped in the air, read with the eyes—but tactile signing, letter by letter, traced into his palm so he could feel each word.
The man was both deaf and blind.
His name was Tim Cook. He was sixty-four years old and lived at Brookdale Senior Living in Portland, Oregon. He had been visiting his sister in Boston. Now he was flying home.
Alone.
On the Plane
When Tim boarded the Alaska Airlines flight, he was assigned a middle seat in Scribner’s row. The man in the aisle seat quietly stood up and offered Tim his place so he’d have more room and easier access.
The flight attendants wanted to help—but they didn’t know how.
Tim reached out gently, touching their faces and arms. This was how he oriented himself, how he understood who was near him. The attendants didn’t pull away. They didn’t rush him. They took his hands and tried different ways to communicate. Nothing worked.
About an hour into the flight, the crew made a decision.
A voice came over the PA system:
Is there anyone on board who knows American Sign Language?
The Call Button
A few rows back, a fifteen-year-old girl pressed her call button.
Her name was Clara Daly.
She had been studying ASL for about a year—not because she’d planned to use it in an emergency, but because she’s dyslexic. When she needed to fulfill a language requirement, written languages were difficult. ASL, a visual and physical language, made sense to her.
A learning difference had quietly prepared her for this moment.
Clara and her mother, Jane Daly, weren’t even supposed to be on this flight. Their nonstop from Boston to Los Angeles had been canceled. They were rerouted—onto this plane. With a stop in Portland. The exact place Tim was going.
When the flight attendant reached Clara’s seat and explained that the passenger was deafblind and that communication would require spelling into his hand, Clara didn’t hesitate.
Later, she said her reaction was simple:
“I was like—this doesn’t seem too hard. Let’s do it.”
One Letter at a Time
Clara walked to Tim’s seat, knelt beside him in the aisle, and gently took his hand.
Letter by letter, she spelled:
How are you?
Are you okay?
Do you need anything?
Tim wanted water. He wanted to know how much longer the flight would be. Clara translated his needs to the flight attendants, then returned to her seat.
A little later, Tim asked for her again.
This time, he didn’t need anything practical.
He was lonely.
So Clara came back and sat with him.
They talked—slowly, patiently—about their lives, their families, ordinary things. Clara spelled into his palm. Tim read her words through his fingertips and responded. Scribner later described the exchange as “fascinating and animated,” despite the silence.
The Moment Everyone Remembered
At one point, Tim asked Clara a question.
Was she pretty?
She blushed and laughed. And the man sitting beside Tim—a stranger who had apparently picked up a few signs during the flight—leaned over and enthusiastically spelled YES into Tim’s hand.
Clara got up three times to sit with him. Toward the end of the flight, she stayed for nearly half an hour.
“He took such joy in the small conversation,” she said later.
“It’s good to make someone feel like they’re not as alone as they might have thought.”
After Landing
When the plane landed in Portland, Tim disembarked. A service provider from Brookdale was waiting at the gate. Later, Tim said it had been the best trip he had ever taken.
Clara and her mother continued on to Los Angeles.
When they got home, Jane posted a photo on Facebook:
“She’ll probably kill me for posting this—but proud of my girl.”
Scribner posted her account too. It was shared more than 700,000 times. Alaska Airlines wrote about the flight. National news picked it up. A flight attendant called Clara “an angel.”
Clara didn’t agree.
“Doing something like that is what anyone would have done,” she said.
Why This Story Matters
Here’s the part that’s easy to miss:
It almost didn’t happen.
If a flight hadn’t been canceled.
If Clara hadn’t been dyslexic.
If the crew hadn’t thought to ask.
If any one link in that chain broke, Tim would have spent the flight alone.
And Tim didn’t need saving.
He had traveled across the country by himself. He had systems in place. He had someone meeting him at the gate.
What he needed on that plane was something most people need at some point:
Someone to talk to.
Someone willing to slow down.
Someone who would take the time to spell How are you? into his hand.
Clara Daly didn’t perform a heroic rescue at thirty thousand feet.
She noticed that a man was alone—and decided he didn’t have to be.
That choice didn’t require brilliance or bravery.
It required presence.
Patience.
And a teenager who heard a call for help and thought, Yeah. I can do that.
Clara said anyone would have done the same.
That’s probably not true.
But the fact that she believed it—that she saw nothing extraordinary in choosing connection—may be the most extraordinary part of the story.
