You are rightfully worried about the top of the posts, but what about the bottom of the "notch"
It is the bearing surface for the beam, and it may be failed worse than the top of the post, since moisture can get trapped there.
You might want to probe the post with a pick there, to see if the bottom of the notch is still solid.

That sounds inspiring, Chris! One of my favorite projects is creating handmade jewelry. I use a mixture of beads and wire for an intricate design. It's quick, fulfilling, and always a hit.
