NPR and three radio stations filed a lawsuit, arguing the order was an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment rights of free speech and a free press. A U.S. District Court judge in DC heard the case, and on Tuesday, he ruled that the order violated the First Amendment and is "unlawful and unenforceable."</p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: normal; color: #000000;"></p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: normal; color: #000000;">This does not restore the funding that Congress eliminated last year. Dear Ben, 

We’re hearing that many Maine Public viewers, listeners, and members are confused by the news this week about a federal court ruling involving public broadcasting. I’m writing to clarify what it means for Maine Public.

First, and most importantly, it does not mean that federal funding for public media is restored. Your support is more important than ever. (https://contact.mainepublic.org/s/4803342/4xSejqoY)

Here’s what happened: President Trump issued an Executive Order last May instructing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and all executive departments and agencies to cease federal funding for NPR and PBS. NPR and three radio stations filed a lawsuit, arguing the order was an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment rights of free speech and a free press. A U.S. District Court judge in DC heard the case, and on Tuesday, he ruled that the order violated the First Amendment and is "unlawful and unenforceable."

This does not restore the funding that Congress eliminated last year. The CPB went out of business, and Maine Public still faces the loss of $5 million in this year and next, approximately 12% of our operating budget.

But the ruling was a victory for the First Amendment, independent journalism, and the rule of law, which is worth celebrating.
