It was on this day in 1969 that Fred Rogers testified before Congress, amid a threat to federal funding for public broadcasting, and he secured the funding needed to build public broadcasting into the service we value today.</p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: 150%; color: #000000;" align="center">Things are different now.</p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: 150%; color: #000000;" align="center">Federal funding is gone.</p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: 150%; color: #000000;" align="center"><strong>Mister Rogers can’t help us this time.</strong></p><p style="font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; line-height: 150%; color: #000000;">Ben, it’s up to us to carry on the legacy of public broadcasting here in Maine. Hi Ben,
For the last few years, Maine Public has marked May 1st by celebrating Mister Rogers Day. It was on this day in 1969 that Fred Rogers testified before Congress, amid a threat to federal funding for public broadcasting, and he secured the funding needed to build public broadcasting into the service we value today.
Things are different now.
Federal funding is gone.
Mister Rogers can’t help us this time.
Ben, it’s up to us to carry on the legacy of public broadcasting here in Maine. When our federal funding was cut, Mainers stepped up in a big way. That support allowed Maine Public to stay on course during that immediate funding crisis and we are so grateful for that.
Now, we need to look ahead and build a sustainable future for this organization. Can we count on you to join us in this effort?
