**The instructions backfire.** Since coding agents do most of the heavy lifting now, your spec doc is more important that ever. That’s why GitHub’s [last review](https://github.blog/ai-and-ml/github-copilot/how-to-write-a-great-agents-md-lessons-from-over-2500-repositories/) of 2,500 agent files is such a wake-up call; the verdict was that most specs fail because they’re just too vague. Now, your first instinct may be to fix that by piling on rules and details, but that’s actually where things go south. If you overload a model with directives, it runs out of "attention budget." It’ll focus on the first few instructions and just quietly ignore the rest.
**Structure carries the weight.** Google Engineer Addy Osmani's [guide](https://addyo.substack.com/p/how-to-write-a-good-spec-for-ai-agents) reframes the spec as a product requirements doc with labeled sections a literal-minded model can actually parse. Osmani says the best specs swap a flat list of don'ts for three tiers, each signaling how much freedom the agent has:
* **Always do. **Keep the safe defaults running instead of pausing them. This includes running tests before commits, following the style guide, and logging errors.
* **Ask first.** Human eyes should always review high-impact moves like schema changes, new dependencies, or CI config edits before they ship.
* **Never do.** Set hard stops with no exceptions. Never commit secrets, edit vendor directories, or delete failing tests just to force a pass. This rule alone saves most teams from disaster.
**The spec is the new code review.** The big takeaway here is that you're shifting where the work actually happens. If you take the time to make your spec sharp, well-structured, and clearly bounded, you won't have to spend hours untangling a mess of confused output later. And that’s definitely a win.
