Still, the ’90s, from my sunny view, seem like a freer, more fun, blessedly phoneless time. People my age and younger pine for this decade because we weren’t around for enough of it to understand why it also sucked! troubling trend — nostalgia for the late 2010s.   Here’s what I
remember about the ’90s: Going to the movies to watch “Muppets In
Space” while my brother was being born. Baloney sandwiches.
McDonald’s PlayPlaces. (If it’s not obvious, I was only around
for about a quarter of the decade and conscious for maybe a few
months.) Everything else I know about the ’90s, I’ve learned from

sociopath. Still, the ’90s, from my sunny view, seem like a
freer, more fun, blessedly phoneless time. People my age and
younger pine for this decade because we weren’t around for enough
of it to understand why it also sucked! As the years pile up
between this idealized past and our wretched present, we reduce
the “good ol’ days” into whatever their most loudest trends,
symbols and characters were. So, as far as I know, the ’90s were
all about battles for coastal rap supremacy, “Friends” and baggy
bottoms. Socioeconomic complexities aren’t the business of
nostalgia tourists. Even if I don’t subscribe to it, ’90s
nostalgia makes sense to me (and I think we’re mostly just
interested in the clothes, anyway). But I’m FLUMMOXED by this
sneaking trend of manufactured nostalgia for a time period that
isn’t even a decade old. Surely we’re not THAT far removed the
2010s that we’re reminiscing on what it was like when new Marvel
movies mattered. But that’s what Disney is counting on in the
trailer for the latest “Avengers”
