Typically frowned upon, yet seemingly permissible by the inspector due to evident dual power supply sources. The living area circuit solely powers lights and ceiling fans, intended for the adjoining space, kitchen, and a bedroom. Upon attempting to install a smart switch, I noticed a sole set of neutral wires, contrary to expectation. Every neutral wire in this box merges collectively. Notably, the second load remains unconnected here. However, adjoining bedroom lights place a load on this circuit. To further elaborate, the original basement circuit
employs a dual AFCI/GFCI breaker (purple test button), while the living area circuit utilizes a combined AFCI breaker (white test button). Incorporating dual power cables into one box within your home is perfectly acceptable. Each wiring element associated with one power source cable, including subcircuits, should maintain separate hots and neutrals. This setup might present two clusters of white cables.
For a multiwire branch circuit, powering different switch groups wired to black and white or red and white is permissible. If the MWBC's two halves reconvene in one box, neutrals (and hots) require separation akin to distinct sources. (Ambitiously detailed) For substantial subpanel additions or branch upgrades, conducting a comprehensive load analysis for the house and each subpanel is advised.
