“Did you remember to write down the address?” Mira asked, tapping the notepad with her pen.
“I did,” Jonah said. “But I also wrote a note to myself that says, ‘Bring the good napkins.’ That part might be more important.”
“Good napkins are always important,” she replied. “Last time we used the thin ones and the whole table looked like a snowstorm.”
Jonah laughed. “Okay, so: napkins, serving board, and the tongs that don’t squeak.”
“The squeaky tongs are retired,” Mira said. “They’re in the drawer for things we don’t trust.”
“Like the peeler that turns carrots into confetti?”
“Exactly. Also, I told Sam we’d arrive a little early to help set up.”
“That means we’ll end up chatting in the kitchen while someone asks where the plates are.”
“And we’ll find them in the cabinet labeled ‘bowls,’” Mira said. “It’s always like that.”
Jonah paused. “Should we bring something simple Maybe a salad?”
“A salad is fine,” Mira answered. “But keep it easy. No complicated dressing experiments.”
“You’re still thinking about the mustard situation,” he said.
“I’m thinking about how everyone was polite,” she replied, “and how politeness can be louder than words.”
“Noted,” Jonah said. “Simple. Tidy. And we leave enough time to breathe.”
“That’s the plan,” Mira said. “Now, let’s not forget the good napkins.”

“Are you still up?” Len asked, leaning into the doorway.
“Yeah,” Priya said, closing the notebook gently. “I was just finishing a few notes from today.”
“The ones about the garden?” Len walked in and sat on the edge of the chair, careful not to bump the stack of magazines.
“Partly,” Priya replied. “Also the list of small things we keep forgetting, like where the spare keys ended up.”
“I thought the spare keys were in the blue bowl,” Len said.
“They were, and then they weren’t,” Priya answered. “I suspect the bowl is a traveling bowl.”
Len smiled. “A bowl with a social life.”
“Exactly. Anyway, I wrote down a plan for tomorrow morning,” Priya continued. “We start with the porch sweep, then water the plants, then we finally sort the drawer of cables.”
“That drawer has been waiting for a speech,” Len said. “A respectful one”
“No speeches,” Priya replied. “Just labels. Simple labels.”
Len nodded. “Okay, but we need music. Quiet music, not the kind that makes you dance with a dustpan.”
“Agreed,” Priya said. “Also, remind me to text Mina back. She asked what time we’re meeting, and I answered in my head instead of on my phone.”
“I do that too,” Len said. “My head has an excellent response time. My thumbs do not.”
Priya laughed softly. “If we keep it calm, we’ll get it done.”
“Calm is good,” Len said. “And if we lose the keys again, we’ll at least have a story.”
“Or a new bowl,” Priya said. “Preferably one that stays put.”
Len stood and glanced at the notebook. “Write that down: ‘Bowl that stays put.’”
“Already did,” Priya replied. “It’s underlined.”
