Mara leaned back in her chair and watched the last few people filter out of the meeting room, the whiteboard still covered in half-erased sketches. “I keep thinking about that first workshop we did,” she said, turning to Devon. “Remember how no
one wanted to speak at the beginning?”
Devon laughed quietly. “I remember you dropping the stack of sticky notes all over the floor. That finally got everyone talking.” He picked up his notebook and flipped through pages filled with uneven handwriting and quick arrows. “It’s stran
ge how the quietest group ended up sharing the most thoughtful ideas.”
“Maybe they just needed time to see that their voices were actually going to be heard,” Mara replied. She walked over to the whiteboard and traced a finger along one of the circles someone had drawn. “I like this suggestion about starting each
session with one simple question. Nothing complicated. Just something to ease people in.”
Devon nodded. “Like asking what they are curious about this week, or what made them smile on the way in.” He paused, looking toward the windows, where late afternoon light stretched across the hallway. “Do you think we should send a short note
before the next gathering, explaining that we want more stories and fewer slides?”
“That might help,” Mara said. “We could share an example or two, so they know it is fine to be honest and even a little unsure.” She smiled. “You could talk about the time your plan changed halfway through and turned out better than expecte
d.”
Devon chuckled. “Which time That happens every other week.” He closed his notebook and slipped it into his bag. “Still, it might reassure people that not everything has to be perfectly polished before they speak.”
Mara erased a corner of the board and left a small sketch of a circle connected to three smaller shapes. “Let’s keep this,” she said. “It feels like what we are trying to build: a space where ideas connect, even when they start out a little r
ough around the edges.”
As they turned off the lights and stepped into the hallway, the building seemed unusually quiet, as if it were listening in on their plans and quietly nodding along.

Leah closed her notebook and glanced across the table at Jonah, who was still sketching small arrows along the margin of his agenda. “You always add those little arrows,” she said, tilting her head. “Do they mean something, or are they just a h
abit at this point?”
Jonah looked down and laughed. “I started drawing them in school whenever I needed to listen more carefully. Somehow they help me track how ideas move through a conversation.” He set the pen aside and folded his hands. “What did you think of th
e feedback from the last session?”
“I was encouraged,” Leah replied. “Several people said they appreciated having space to ask simple questions without feeling rushed. One person mentioned that the pause before each discussion round helped them gather their thoughts.” She paus
ed, recalling the quiet nods around the room. “It reminded me that not everyone likes to speak right away, and that is completely fine.”
Jonah nodded slowly. “I noticed that too. When we allowed a moment for notes, the conversation that followed felt more thoughtful.” He reached for a glass of water and took a small sip. “Next time, I would like to start with a short story from
someone on the team, just to make everything feel more grounded.”
Leah smiled. “We could invite Ana to share how she prepared for the last workshop. She had that color-coded list, remember It might help others see that preparation can look different for each person.” She leaned back and listened to the soft hum
of the building around them. “I think people respond well when they sense that every question is welcome.”
“Agreed,” Jonah said. “We should also give more time at the end for reflection. A few people were still writing when we wrapped up.” He tapped the table gently, marking an invisible rhythm. “Maybe we can close with a simple prompt, like ask
ing what felt most helpful and what they are curious about exploring next time.”
Leah nodded. “That sounds like a good way to keep the conversation going between sessions,” she said. “If we collect those thoughts consistently, we will start to see patterns that can guide how we shape the next round of gatherings.”
As they gathered their materials and pushed back their chairs, the evening light shifted across the room, casting long, calm shadows that seemed to echo the steady pace they hoped to bring to every future conversation.
